Tips For When You Hit The Dreaded Writer's Block

Writer's block is a struggle. Somedays you'll find the words just flowing out of you and then other days, you just stare at a blank word document. Hitting that roadblock is hard when you know you have content that you need to get out for clients. I've put together a few of my favorite tips to help you get past that block and start cranking out the content.

Walk Away

The first thing I do when I've been staring at the screen for too long is I walk away. Staring at the blank screen makes me stressed and I know I'm not going to be putting out anything good if I'm too overwhelmed. Go find something to take your mind off of the content for a few minutes. Whether that is taking your dog for a walk, working out or even hopping in the shower (anyone else get the best ideas in the shower?!) will help you clear your head a little bit and make room for those new ideas. I think ideas hit me best when I'm not forcing it. You never know, you may have an awesome idea hit you mid workout :)

Write It All Down

When you find yourself coming up with a bunch of ideas, don't just store them all in your head. Chances are you will forget a bunch of them anyway. When I have a few ideas, I like to keep a running google document of everything. I write down every single idea - even if I know some will never actually make it to the blog. Usually when I start writing everything down, more ideas will come to me. It tends to spark new ideas. If I have a points that I really want to talk about I try to make a note of it so that when I look back on it I'll remember what I was thinking about originally. When you hit that road block a few months down the road, you will thank your past self for giving you all of these great ideas!

Read Your Own Blog

Okay so this may seem a little weird but I swear it works. Go back and read your own blog. Are you finding that you talk more about one specific topic and missing out another one? Are there a lot of comments on specific topics? Try to notice these small details and see what you may be missing out on and need to expand on further down the road. Re-reading your past posts will most likely spark some new ideas anyway!

Writers block is totally normal, don't let it get you down! Just know that this is part of the writing process and you will go through it more than once. It's one of the not so fun parts about being a creative but there are definitely ways that you can get yourself out of your writing rut.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Can you believe that 2019 is already here?! I don't know about you, but it seemed like I blinked and 2018 was over! 2018 was a year of learning for me. I worked really really hard. I gained more clients than I ever have before. And honestly, I got lost in my client work. I didn't have time to work on my website, my podcast or any of my passion projects. I put everything on the back burner to power through my everyday work. I got burned out really really quick and had all these questions about where to go next, what goals to start working on, etc. It was a year of learning, a year of realizing what I love doing and what I don't.

I learned why I love doing what I do so much. I've been able to help small businesses create a community on their social accounts all while giving them a little extra time to do what they love to. All in all, I'd say 2018 was pretty good. Don't get me wrong, the rough times were pretty rough but it taught me SO SO much. I'm so happy that I've been lucky enough to work with so many great clients. Each and every one of them has taught me something different, and chances are, they have no idea!

You may have noticed a few changes on my website in the last few months and I'm so excited about the changes. I've decided to cater my services to more health and wellness businesses because that is where my heart has been the last year or two. I've been making a lot of changes in my life and can't get it out of my head on the daily. I want to be able to impact more people's lives and I think by offering my services to creatives and small businesses in the health and wellness space will let me do just that. I'm excited about this big change for this upcoming year! Now, what are your big goals for 2019?! I can't wait to hear about them so be sure to comment below!

Workout Roundup

I am excited to let you guys in a little secret. As I am making a few changes to my website behind the scenes and planning out all the new fun things for 2019. One thing that I am incorporating into my blog is a weekly roundup of all my workouts. As you may know already, I am taking some time away from being a member at a Crossfit gym to focus on my nutrition through a program called Working Against Gravity but I still want to get in my workouts! It can be really hard to motivate yourself when it’s just you so I’m hoping these Friday blogs will motivate me and you to get up and get moving!

These are just the workouts that work best for me and my schedule. I am in no way a doctor, trainer, or nutritionist so always be sure to check in with your doctor or trainer before doing any kind of workout!

11/7 (running day)

8 Rounds

.20 mile run on treadmill (1-4 @5.2 speed, 5-6 @5.4 speed, 7-8 @5.6 speed)

.10 walk at half speed

Total Distance = 2.4 miles

11/8 (quickie!)

Warmup of half mile run & stretching/mobility

3 Rounds for time

15 thrusters w/ 20 lb dumbbells

15 burpees

Time: 9:22 (super not happy with this time but this workout surprised me with how hard it was! Definitely going to be redoing this again in a few weeks to see if I’ve improved.)

I only was able to squeeze in two gym sessions this week but it’s better than nothing. Looking forward to getting back into the gym this weekend and sweating. What did you do this week?!

A Business Update

I have been away from this blog for far too long. The last 6 months have been a world wind for me. I took on a few too many clients which was followed up with a solid few months of burnout. It made me re think about my business and how I can really help business owners to the best of my ability. I've taken the last few months to really dig in deeper to what I can do to help and I'm excited to let you guys know that a big change is coming really soon!

I'm not leaving social media so don't worry! I've been behind the scenes working on a few sneaky projects that will help small business owners rock their social media to the best that they can. One thing I've really been noticing with my clients that social media is SO personal. As much as I can study and work with you on your brand, I'm still not you and I get that sometimes, it's just too scary to hand over those accounts to a stranger. That's why I have been working hard on creating a program that will allow you to work on your social media but with me right by your side. I'll be challenging you, inspiring you and working together to take your voice with a few of my ideas and my tips to help you rock your social media platforms on your own. I will be handing over all of my tools to you and teaching you everything I know to help you grow your social media. (specifically Instagram!) The program isn't ready yet but should be out before the end of the year. Stay tuned!

I've also been creating a few new services for you. I have something for everyone. From social media management packages to hashtag packages to engagement, there is literally something for everyone. I want to be able to help you exactly where you are! If you suck at hashtags, I got you covered. If you want to hash out ideas, I've created a $30 for 30 minute idea call that we will talk about anything and everything that you need help with.

I am really excited about these upcoming changes and I promise to keep you updated on the release date. It will be before 2019 but I will make the announcement really soon <3

Automating Your Social Media

A common issue I always hear about is not having enough time for social media. From creating content to the actual posting, it can take up a lot of time in your already busy schedule. Well, I'm here to tell you there is a way to make social media SO MUCH EASIER! One of the best things that you can do is schedule out your social media ahead of time. It completely takes out posting in the moment (which you can totally still do) but it gives you less time for stressing. I like to take as much stress out of my day as possible and not having to worry about what the heck to post makes my life so much easier.

There are endless options out there for schedulers and there is a scheduler for just about every platform. It may take some trial and error but find a tool that will work best for you. There are endless recommendations out there but everyones needs are a bit different.  I always recommend trying the program out with the free trial before deciding. Some of the tools that have been recommended to me I just haven't loved as much as others. I personally love to use Tailwind, Buffer & Later.

automating your social media

When you schedule out your content in advance, it makes you do one thing that I highly recommend - batch work! It lets you create your content in batches in stead of one blog post here and one blog post there. I like to think that I am way more productive when it comes to batching things because I am already in that mindset and I don't have to completely switch to the next task. It allows you to take a look at your schedule too. Are you launching any new programs? Do you have any awesome company events? These are all important things that should play into your content as well.

You can schedule it out however long in advance that you'd like, whether it is a week or a whole month. This leaves you time to get your actual to do list done during the day.  You can always pop in from time to time during the day to see if there are any questions or comments to respond to. If you are doing anything fun during the day - feel free to Instagram story it! You can still do things in the moment to post to social media but scheduling out your content gives you back some time during the week.

Creating Content

Writing content can be time consuming and we aren't even talking about how much time sharing the content takes. It can overwhelm a small business owner when they have their business to run. Their to do list is constantly growing and adding content creation to that means a constant project each and every week. It's no surprise that it usually always stays on the to do list. The way people consume their information seems to be constantly changing and it can be hard to keep up with the trends.

Content is now a part of everyone's day. Most people seem to be spending less time reading their favorite blogs and more time scrolling feeds. I'll be honest, even I feel like I am reading my favorite blogs less and less over time. It's something I love to do but when there is too much to do, it doesn't get done. Usually, people just spend time scrolling through  their Instagram feed.

Think about how you can create content but in a different way. Thinking outside of the box will not only get YOU excited to create the content but your followers as well. It will be the thing you start looking forward to each week instead of the one thing you are dreading.   Find the best way that you enjoy creating content and start creating!  Whether that is through Instagram, snapchat, Facebook live or even podcasting, just start. I promise it isn't as scary as you may think it can be!

Why I Decided To Hire a Business Coach

When you are first starting out in business or even 5 years into it, everything is a learning opportunity. From what services you want to offer to different onboarding tactics, you learn the different processes that work best for you and your clients. I know I've mentioned this before but 2017 was my first year working for myself full-time. I learned so much last year and I am still learning things as I go. I'm sure for as long as I will be in business, I will be learning!

The one downside of working for yourself is that you don't have any coworkers, atleast I didnt. I didn't have a network of people that I could ask questions to. I had to just do what I thought was right and adjust accordingly along the way. After last summer, I decided to hire a business coach just to help me get on track for a few weeks. I felt like having someone who has been in my position before would be so incredibly beneficial for me. It was honestly the BEST thing I could have done for myself. I had been following Alisha Nicole for over a year. From reading her blog to her newsletter, I had always admired her and what her business had become. One day while I was sitting at Starbucks, I decided to schedule a free consult with her. She was just as amazing over the phone as I had imagined her to be. She listened to my concerns, answered my questions and most importantly - gave me the confidence and support that I needed to keep going. It can be hard working for yourself. Sometimes, you just want to give in and get a day job but working for yourself and crushing your goals is way more rewarding in the long run.

I ended up working with Alisha for a month and it was the best experience. If you are just starting out or even an established business, it definitely doesn't hurt to have someone keep you accountable. She made sure that all of my homework and assignments were completed before having our sessions. My monthly session with her is completed but I still feel inspired by her! She gave me that extra support and push that I was looking for. Seeing how far she has come and how she is absolutely crushing her goals is a constant inspiration for me!

Hiring a business coach was something I honestly never thought I would do but I'm so glad that I did. If you are feeling stuck or just uninspired, check your local Facebook business group or ask your business friends for recommendations. There are so many business coaches out there that are ready to challenge and push you to grow your business and keep you accountable.

Here is Alisha's information if you guys are interested & she has an awesome podcast that I cannot recommend enough!

How Crossfit Changed My Business

When I first launched Caitydougherty.com and started freelancing full time, I wasn't quite sure what I was doing. I felt like I needed to be doing all of the things, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I couldn't nail down a schedule for myself. I'm sure most entrepreneurs feel that exact same way. There is always something that needs to be done or there is always ideas swirling around in your head. It's hard to take a step back and let yourself relax.

I've always been a creative person and coming up with new ideas is one of my favorite things to do. Whether it is for clients or for a personal project, I find that even when I'm "off work" I'm still thinking about work. Part of is has to do with loving what I do but I also live in a studio apartment and I feel like work is always there when I'm home.

After a good 6 months of working on my own, I fell into a pattern of working all the time! Nights, weekends, you name it - if I wasn't already on my laptop I had it in my bag. I felt like I needed to work to grow and wasn't taking any time for myself. I didn't think that I had time to actually work on any self care. With a growing to do list, usually self care gets pushed to the bottom.. over and over again. I had started Crossfit about a year and a half ago and have been doing it off and on since then. I never made it an official part of my schedule because again, work came first. I noticed that when I made a conscious effort to stay on track with going, my brain and my productivity was that much better! I was getting away from my laptop for a designated hour a day and could relieve any stress that I was having that day out onto my workout.

Now, I'm not saying that you have to do crossfit, but I highly recommend putting some kind of workout into your week! It is so important to keep your body and mind happy and healthy. Not only is working out great for your body but I found that is was way better for my productivity and mental health. I find that I'm more productive with my time when I keep up a good sweat schedule! So find something that you love to do. Whether that is Crossfit, Zumba, Yoga, running, or even just dancing in your living room, find something that you love to do and that will keep you moving. You can only be as a good of business owner as your body and mind will let you - so it's important to put your health first so you can be the best that you can be for your clients!

Easy Mistakes To Make On Instagram

Instagram is by far my favorite social media platform. There are so many amazing accounts on there that I feel like I can just get lost in my explore feed for days. From delicious foods to my dream vacations, there is SO much on Instagram. But, sometimes that's not always a good thing. It's easy to get lost on Instagram with so many different accounts and everyone striving to the be best. Here are a few mistakes that you may be making.

Every hashtag, all the time.

You’re allowed to post 30 hashtags in every post on Instagram. While hashtags are amazing for getting discovered it shouldn’t be the end all be all. Using every single hashtag is not a guarantee that you will get onto the explore page and blow up your account. With constant shadow bans and hashtags being hijacked, it’s important to focus more on putting out GOOD quality content on your account.

Bots

If you know me at all, you know that there is nothing that I hate more than Instagram bots. Have you ever seen a post about something really sad and devastating and there’s a comment saying nice with the thumbs up? Ugh! This completely grinds my gears. Trust me, I know it seems so nice and easy to just hire a bot to do your engagement because it gives you back so much time. I get it, I really do! But, I promise this will only hurt you instead of help you. Cheating the system is not going to get you the right followers.  It will never convert into actual sales.

BOR-RING

Are you being boring? Are you MIA all the time? This is an easy mistake to make and unfortunately, I am definitely guilty of this.  It’s okay to take a risk and post something that is maybe outside of your aesthetic every now and then. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Maybe your idea of going outside of the box is posting a video one-day instead of a video. Or even a boomerang. It’s your account!

You Don’t Have a Strategy

It may not seem like a big deal but having an Instagram strategy is actually incredibly helpful. You may not have a strategy or you may even have TOO many strategies. Sometimes, doing all the things all the time isn’t helpful either. I know, confusing right? Think about one goal that you want. Are you trying to grow your followers? Do you want to create a better feed and aesthetic? Focus on one! Try it out, monitor and track it, tweak the strategy if you have to and develop it into a strategy that works. After that, move onto the next goal!

Comment below with your Instagram handle, I'd love to check out your account!

Ugh, Where Have I Been?!

Whew, so it's 2018! And let's be real.. I've been the worst blogger ever since October. This is my official apology and my announcement to tell you I am back and I am here to stay! :)

2017 was my first year freelancing full time as a social media manager and ghost writer and it was one heck of a year! It was honestly one of the best years, it was full of a lot of highs and a few lows. I got a chance to work with so many talented entrepreneurs and learned more than I could ever imagine. One of the biggest things that I learned was that I totally suck at making my own blog a commitment (wah wah, sorry guys!) and I promise 2018 is going to be a year of changes. You may be notice a few new website & service changes but I promise it is ALL good. I am so so excited about where my brand is going this year and I honestly can't wait to share it with you soon.

What I can tell you is that blogging is going to become a regular thing over here and you will see a bit more lifestyle posts as well as more freelance, business, and social media tips. It's going to be a bit more of my life and a bit more honest and raw. I will also be adding a shop later this year full of social media printable planners and even a place where you can check out my side hustle (Caity & Co - where I paint shoes!) Everything is going to be available in one place and I am SO SO excited. Stay tuned for lots of exciting changes <3
